beowulf

Brief from client

me and a friend of mine started a year ago a project involving beekeeping. I thought it would be a good idea to name it "beowulf" meaning "bear". Idea came after we were eating honey directly from a comb and his father told us we are like bears....

the problems i have are the top of the "e" and the kerning at OWU. I still brew something about a symbol.

Hello Hueroth, what is an original language that translates " beowulf " into " bears "?

Good question, i forgot to explain this. This would be the explanation, source is wiki:
Henry Sweet, a philologist and early linguist specializing in Germanic languages, proposed that the name Beowulf literally means in Old English "bee-wolf" or "bee-hunter" and that it is a kenning for "bear".[1] This etymology is mirrored in recorded instances of similar names. Biuuuwulf is recorded as a name in the AD 1031 Liber Vitae. The name is attested to a monk from Durham and literally means bee wolf in Northumbrian.[2] The 11th century English Domesday Book contains a recorded instance of the name Beulf.[2] A scholar named Sarrazin also suggested that the name Beowulf was derived from a mistranslation of Böðvarr where -varr was interpreted as vargr meaning "wolf".[3] However, this etymology was questioned by Sophus Bugge, who instead suggested that the personage Böðvarr Bjarki was derived from Beowulf.[3]

The main problem I see here is when I look at it, I really don't think about bee keeping. The word "Beowulf" comes with a very distinct imagery and universe, that has more to do with Vikings crushing skulls and drinking hydromel than cute little bees flying around flowers =) Your logo is more makes me think of video game more then anything.

I wont change the name , Charlie. For a beekeper also is the name of a very nasty wasp that has the same name in my country (lup de albine = bee wolf) and is also unfit, still, I wont change it. And the bees are not so fluffy and qute, i can tell you this. :P

Marian, don't forget about that idea for your next project that Charlie mentioned to you where a stud muffin viking that crushed skulls, drinking hydromel is getting stinged by Romanian painted bees, as he illegally broke into a Transylvanian land.

This feels even more like a video game logo now that there is a legitimate premise behind the video game.

OH GOOD GOD, at what kind of games came out along the time, with a good marketing i guess this would work something out.

The "W" dominates the rest of the word. Love the "B" and the stinger, but the other stinger points seem like overkill. Plus the "B" could stand on its own as a logo,

And the O seems so lonely there all alone, with no embellishment.

It is not a " W ", it is Dracula's fangs welded together to protect bees. I do agree with you on a " B " being a single letter to make a symbol, good point.

But bees don't fly at night and everyone knows Dracula can't be out during the day. So logically it makes no sense. :)

We have either a case of glitter vampires (glitterpires) or nocturnal bees (beenocs).

Guys, i am over this version now. I will come with the new one at the end of the week, but i am pretty busy. Bees are active during the night, you dont want to stir a beehive while in the dark, but their only concern is in the hive and at the entrance. The new version will have nothing to do with this except the name.

yesterday i watched "there will be blood" and now you appeared.....that's odd.

See, Marian, I was right about bees being active at night. Thank you for confirming that fact. Good luck with a new version and be careful around hive and bees.

Marian, we all residents of the only planet that we occupied during our lives - it is a small world. Of course you already knew that, right? How was that movie and did you see " Train of Life "?

hueroth's picture

There will be blood is about oil derricks at the beginnings and about a reckless man. Train of life is somewhere on the list , but i need a certain state of mind and soul to see that kind of movie.

Sorry but for a bee-keeping business, this won't work. It's coll that you're having fun with the whole hand lettering thing, but like your first logo, you are totally off the mark.

You can keep the name if you want, but at least adapt it graphically to the business it represents. When I see this, I wouldn't think about bee-keeping in a million years.

I know this struggle all too well: what you want to do vs what the brands needs you to do. Sometimes, this two things don't go hand in hand. But what will be judged is not only your ability to come up with a well-designed logo but above all a well thought through logo. You need to adapt to what the brand needs, not the other way around.

yeah, i know i seem stuborn this way but i really need to finish this as i started. After this, if i am not pleased with it i will change it again. Thanks for the input.
