Brief from client
HuntFinder (South African based) is an app directory connecting hunters and outfitters across the globe. The client wanted a logo original to South Africa, eye-catching, clean and minimalistic, that will work well as an app icon as well.
I chose the trophy of a Black Wildebeest as for the iconic horns and it is native to South Africa. The eroded font is used as it reminds you of the bushveld grass planes. I chose to use only the two colours as I wanted to take away anything else that can distract from the logo, and use only the red to draw your eye toward the Black Wildebeest, and also the target of your hunt.

Sorry, but symbol doesn't work in here. Shield is for a sake of a shield and needs to go. Perhaps, working on a font more would get your goal achieve.
Thank you for your advice, I will definitely give that a shot!
Personally I don't think that the eroded fonts works with the pristine symbol. I think they need to match.
Also, I think that mount that the skull is on makes sense, as it is a mount, for a trophy.
Thank yo Waffles, I will explore some different typefaces.
I get the idea behind this logo, I can dig it, but the end result fails to deliver.
First off, that skull looks really weird and clip arty. The horns are way too symmetrical for my taste.
Avoid using pre-distressed font like this one. It would look better without the scrap metal effect.
Thanks Shawali, I did mirror the skull to get it symmetrical, and I totally get what you are saying. I'm going back to the drawing board!
If the icon is a mounted skull, it would get this across much better if parts of it (like the horns) exceeded the edges of shield. Right now it looks squished to force it into the shape. I agree with the distressed font issue. When this logo is reduced, as it will have to be for certain applications, the letters will fill in anyway. Try to find a font that has a more sophisticated 'African plains' feel
Thanks for the advice Bob Brertz, I think you are right regarding the skull / mount relationship, I guess I initially wanted to create a frame around the skull.
