Logo for a co-worker

Brief from client
A co-worker of mine came up with a sketch, so I made it as close as possible to is drawing. The name of the company we is "forward thinking" The name is suppose to convey positive thinking and quotes from the Bible. His company is going to be a clothing brand by the way. This is currently a bitmap and I'm currently working on the vector file

So, to put it bluntly, this logo conveys everything BUT forward thinking.
I've designed for more than one church before, and every time, it is because we have to update logos like this.
For one, you should be working in vector from the get go. No logo should ever have a bitmap working file.
The font is very outdated and gets lost in this overly complicated symbol. The symbol itself needs a LOT of cleaning up and styling. The waves are very wonky and have some weird straight lines at the bottom of each crest. The tree just has a lot of weird notches at the end of each point that need to be cleaned up.
I would do a lot of research into how logos are made and what makes a forward thinking logo, even for a religious company or organization.
Thank you for your reply. I personally would of gone with a simpler design but I want to honor the design my co worker came up with as best as I can. I'll look into the points you made. To be honest I was hoping to get a harsher and brutally honest reply than a complement because constructive criticism is the best way to find out if you're doing the right thing.
I think you can honor his concept while improving the artwork and making sure it actually stands well as a logo.
I would also question the island theme. Islands don't tend to move forward, they convey a feeling of relaxation and slowing down.
If you want an ocean theme of moving forward, maybe consider something along the lines of sailing. But that is just me throwing ideas out there.
Hmm. I didn't think of the island that way and what you just said makes a lot of sense. Originally he didn't have an island, I added it since I didn't want the tree floating in the water. I'll let him know about the sailboat idea. Thanks for your help.
