New York City Football Club

Brief from client

www garrettprentice com

When it was announced that New York City was going to take in an MLS franchise, I was chomping at the bit to develop my ideas and build an identity for the team. I wanted to challenge myself to create a branding case study.

I like the overall idea. With that said here are some things that I think could be improved.

Instead of a stroke on the type, why not make it just white because it is very difficult to read the type at reduced size.

Sorry to be so blunt, but critiques always help me, so I don't hold back on giving them to others. :-) Loved a lot of the designs on your site, though.

I'm not crazy about the spikes repeated throughout the design. At the inner circle it detracts the eye from being able to see the soccer ball, which is also difficult to see at reduced size because of the stripes and spikes.

The logo primarily comes across to me like a police or fireman's badge.

Yeah basically those spikes are just overkill to me and then with the star in the center, it just seems like too much.

This logo rocks. Love it. Everything about it works very well and communicates the message nicely.

I like the color palette but I'm not sure it fits the product. A "fútbol" team, any sports team for that matter, should have more aggressive colors.

Sports are a metaphor of a battlefield where two clans clash head on at full force and only one emerges victorious. Warriors painted their faces a certain way to enhance their appearance and intimidate their enemies. Can you imagine a viking painting his face with pastel colors? Yeah, it defeats the purpose.

Try using more aggressive colors and see how that feels.

Also, I think there are too many spikes. With fewer spikes the logo looks cleaner while still conveying the message of the Statue of Liberty.

I would also increase the size of the soccer ball patches to fit the area better.

I just went ahead and mocked up what I'm trying to say rather than typing it here :)

Check it out, and sorry for hijacking your logo :p.

EDIT -- I mean to ask: Why aren't you using the current NYC FC colors? http://my.nycfc.com/

Interesting take, and thank you for your interest. I might readdress this logo at some point, but right now, I'm going to leave it as is because I quite like it. For one, the spikes are actually from the Chrysler Building in NY, and I could probably get rid of at least one row. I originally wanted to use the NYCFC colors but honestly just liked these better, although I have been met with an overwhelming disagreement to that decision lol. Here is what it looks like with the current colors. I would go with the middle one if I had to choose.

Not sure if you're aware but, and gprentice303 correct if I'm wrong, the spikes symbolize the crown of the Statue of Liberty which I honestly think work very well with this logo.

They represent the Chrysler building, but I had the statue of liberty in mind as well.
