Open Tech Engine

Brief from client

Open Tech Engine is a free and open source 3D game engine.

The three words in the name means:

* Open means "free software" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software), you can use it, browse and change code.

* Tech means technology.

* Engine means a framework, in this case, for making games (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_engine).

It's being very complicated for me to create this logo because the engine name is too abstract.

---------

I did many different designs until I got this one. There are older designs and discussions here: https://github.com/OpenTechEngine/Discussions/issues/10

Since this is a free and open source software project I had the idea of creating an open box viewed from the top with a gear inside it.

The open box would mean "open / free access" and the gear would mean the "engine".

The font used is the Fira Sans, which is a free font by Mozilla.

I want to create a logo that is clever and as simple as possible.

I'm not a designer, but I do know something about it and did some designs before. I'm creating this logo for free to contribute to the project.

Ok so my first thought is that I really like how I saw that this was an open box top with such little marks. Having said that I think maybe exploring some with viewing an open box from the side could produce some other interesting marks as well. I get your struggle with figuring out how to indicate engine, games, and technology. I'm not sure I'm sold on the idea of using a gear. I'm just on the fence with that.
I'm not sure what the thought process behind green was. Can you explain that a little more? The colors right now just don't feel like gaming or fun to me. That green actually makes me think of the super old computer screens that just had that green type on it. Speaking of type this font is not good at all. I'm not sure if you were purposely picking a free font because it too is open source, but very few if any people would make that connection. Explore some other fonts. Also the spacing is really off. There is a huge space between Open and Tech that looks really odd. Then the word Engine is super loosely kerned and is an awkward size is relation to the main two words. If it is a subtext, then make it a subtext and lower the size. So all around the symbol isn't bad, but there may be another way to express gaming and fun a little better. The font needs to be re-addressed and maybe research colors a little more.

I think that this solves some of the issues you commented about:

I like this version the best; more so than version 2 and 3. I'm not 100% sold on the type, but it's an improvement over the original. Maybe try one or two more fonts and upload it as version 4?

Thank you. I also like this one the best, it's much more simple.
I just submitted a fourth design with a new font.

Thank you for the suggestions.

About the color, I was using a blue color and decided to just use a different color, I agree that it doesn't fit well and looks too strong.

Using a free font is a must since we don't want to spend money, and we can't use a proprietary font because of license restrictions. Also, we like using free things and supporting them.

I tried using a box with a 3D look, but I don't think it looked good:
