Rhythm & Q's

Brief from client

A logo for an annual Fall Festival called Rhythm & Q's. The Festival is a live music and bbq competition combo.

Hey everyone. So I've had a bunch of ideas for this logo. From having a pig playing guitar to keeping it as strictly as a typographic logo where the tail for the "Q" swirls like the tail of a pig.
I decided to start with this, something simple, a bit of negative space and thick lines used.

The idea was to have the lines of a piano also act as the lines of a grill and having flames burst up from the piano/grill.
Feedback is appreciated, I might move to a different idea if this one doesn't come across clearly. Thanks

Idea: piano keys = bbq grill ;)

This is looking pretty good already! Maybe just maybe the stroke of the fire is a bit too thick.

Can't wait to see your other ideas. You obviously know what you're doing!

Awesome, I appreciate it! I'll get around to thinning out the fire just a bit.

BTW: where is the festival happening? Music and BBQ, my two favorite things ;)

Ok, so the idea behind this logo is solid. I love it, its clever and I got it right away.

what you really need is some tweaking.

Your arc on your lettering is both not centered, and the kerning is awkward.
Instead of trying to use the Type On Path tool (which is what I'm assuming you did), try turning your type into an object, and using the Envelope distort tool. That way your kerning doesn't get ruined and you can still achieve the arc that you wanted.

at the bottom of the flame, where is meets the piano keys/grill, the left bottom is a little further out from the keys than the right side. that just needs a small tweak.

Maybe consider a contrasting font for the tagline, but that is a neutral part of this for me, it looks great either way.

I had no idea arcs can be done with the Envelope distort tool, I'll try it out! Thanks for all the small tweaks that you pointed out. I didn't want to spend time doing the fine tuning if the basic idea for the logo didn't work out. I'll definitely keep your critique in mind, thank you.

Use the "arch" preset, and once you achieve the right arc angle, tweak the horizontal and vertical settings so that it looks even.

Nice to see text on a path used well as Erin suggests. Almost there I think.
