First off, I read "intage". It's difficult to make the V with that pair of scissors. As a rule of thumb, avoid replacing characters with a symbol or shape or whatever. You'll just screw with the balance and readability of the font.
The general composition is too complicated. It looks like the scissors are about to cut that gentleman's throat. And the string coming from the monocle and touching the i isn't bringing anything good besides more complication. The collar of the lapel on the left does also, by touching slightly touching the scissors.
The gentleman's head isn't too bad. It needs some tweaking, like removing the string altogether, but it can work. Maybe also remove the stroke on the monocle.
About the colors, avoid having two dark shade like this black and dark purple. There's not enough contrast.
You're not quite there yet but there's potential in this logo.
I would definitely go for a vintage style logo here. It's in the name, after all! Do some research and see where that takes you. I agree with substituting the scissors with text, that's a hard thing to successfully pull off. Nine times out of ten it looks forced and awkward.
Look at the logos made by user M@. These are more of the style that would very much suit this logo. Faded colors, decorative elements, that good stuff.
At the risk of sounding like a lunatic who sees strange things in logos, The scissors bother me. I know you wanted to shape them to fill three roles: Scissors, a necktie, and the letter "V", but the image of a man with scissors to his neck looks a little threatening. And taken with the image of Victorian gentleman, it gives me a bit of a creepy Sweeney Todd feel. Sweeney Todd was a barber who slashed and murdered his clientele.

This isn't working for me.
