What happens to the submitted logo designs? Do you own them? Will the logosbe placed into inventory and resold on Pixellogo.com?

All submitted logotypes for the Brandsoftheworld.com logo contest will be listed and displayed along with the graphic designer's details. The author of the artwork will retain full copyrights of the submitted artwork and agrees that by participating in this contest, Brandsoftheworld.com retains the rights to display all submitted artwork for non-commercial purposes indefinitely. Furthermore, any submitted artwork will not be sold through any third party company (including Pixellogo.com) unless the author agrees for such an arrangement with any third party.

Since the logos are not to have been published prior, then the logos should be generic in nature -- meaning the company name should not be real?

If you have any other name or you are working on some real logo which you can publish (rejected work or similar) you are welcome to use it.

I can't find in your page the format of the pics needed to upload for the contest.

You need to upload both vector logo and bitmap preview. Vector logo can be in .ai, .eps, .cdr or .pdf format, while bitmap preview should be .gif file.
