I think this version looks better, but you should try adding more space between the symbol and the text, and also make some minor adjustments on the kerning.

The symbol slightly smaller than the text might work too, or the text smaller than the symbol, wichever works better. I'm not sure about this last suggestion yet, but you should definitely test it ;)

Yes. You could try adding a little bit of space between the letters in both words, but make sure that the space between the characteres are equal. I think it would work out really well!

This layout works much better, I think. I would give the symbol a bit more breathing room, but other than that I think it's a good product.

Is the pencil looks fat or is it just me?

Remember that one logo can have several versions, with different compositions, colors, etc. So you have more flexibility depending the context your logo will be used in.

I’m with Shawali on this one. I’d like to see the black and white version of this that shows flexibility.

I’d personally stay clear of the shape of your logo (especially since it feels completely arbitrary), which is a crowded area for things art-related (see: http://cl.ly/image/012D1h0L3L0L). See also: http://cl.ly/121K1N111A1a

I appreciate how it makes the implied teardrop shape, and not blatantly outlining it. For this reason, I think it works well.

That’s the thing though—it has no business being a teardrop shape in the first place, implied or not. Is it implying the shape of a loupe? Is it implying a water droplet? Is it a clever shape choice to create an ‘a’ or ‘Q’? Nope, nope, and nope.
