Patterns In Motion Recordings

Brief from client

My brother was looking to name his new label 'Patterns In Motion Recordings' and asked me to come up with a logo/brand. No real ideas, colour preference or guidance was given, he left it totally up to me.

It has been added to his site, however still needs updating.

After a few frustrating early attempts I came up with this design. I have variations too with circles missing and using outline text for example.

I'm keen to know what you guys think, maybe even improvements that could be made in the future.

I regularly check in here to see folks work and I'm always impressed in one way or another.

Thanks for checking out and look forward to hearing any feedbacks.

Iain.

There is a lot of things going on here which makes the viewer lose focus.
3 different fonts and each with a different graphic interventions applied is a bit too much for the faint of heart.

Stop for a moment and think about this quote by Mies van der Rohe: "Less is more."
Maybe it will help you realize what is wrong with this logo.

I'd like to rate with half a thumb to each aspect of your design.

The font in "PATTERNS" is too complex and brings a lot of noise.
Those "O"'s in "MOTION" look like tires. I know they should be LP's but fail.
The font in "RECORDINGS" is waaaay too thin.
Finally, that baby blue is to soft, maybe some other hue like navy blue would look more sober.

Last minute observation: I noticed that the font in "RECORDINGS" is dotted. That's wrong, It's not a good idea to use a detailed font when the text is that small.

Yep- way too much going on here- simplicity is key.

It looks like you are trying to bring attention to every word. Which is most important? What are you trying to convey to the audience?

If the client didn't provide a design brief- create one for yourself. Research the industry. ask the client questions. Your design will benefit greatly- It's obvious right now you have no direction because the logo is all over the place.

I'm not going to rate this because I'm sure you will be back with something more focused.

We'll go from there : )-

I understand all your points and appreciate your views. Thanks for bringing these to my attention.

Having so many words to incorporate was frustrating, but the main focal point is the name 'Patterns In Motion.' The dotted 'Recordings' I chose so it is there, but hardly noticable and does hold it's own when smaller.

I may revisit this at some point, but time is tight and my Brother is very happy with it, I've also had great feedback from those involved.

I'm not a professional designer at all, but self taught and now work in design. I'm a firm believer in brands are what you make them as long as you have a solid ideology.
