Portfolio Critique

Brief from client

Hey guys, I know this isn't a logo, but you all have been such a great help here at Brands of the World in getting me jumpstarted into graphic design. If any of you could please take a moment and look at the DESIGN section of my portfolio (website is a work in progress) any and all critiques would be MUCH appreciated!!!

Your photographic and retouching work is impressive! You really are a Photoshop expert! Are these just personal projects or do you get commissions?

The way you present your logo is very different from the rest, which ruins slightly the consistency of the website. I would also put this section on the down low, since it's not your strongest suit. Yet =)

Also, the self portrait in the about section is bit too gloomy, at least for my taste. Maybe put something more natural looking.

I really like your Wilton logo. Have posted it here before?

You have some major works there. You should move to LA and do album artworks for the up and coming pop stars =)

Good idea to ask for people to comment on your portfolio. All the while coming up with something nicely done to illustrate the post, so no one think you're only promoting yourself =)

Thanks for the feedback! Yea the way I'm presenting the photos and retouching will change to be more like the design section so they flow together better. Those sections aren't done yet. Wilton logo and a couple others I did not post here (trying to stand up on my own two feet for at least a couple of these!). My photo work is almost all for my own pleasure and practice (and gaining some followers on social media). I mean that would be my dream if I could just do freelance and get commissions on photography, but I'm 25 years old and that definitely has not happened yet. If LA was cheaper and I didn't have to leave my family I would definitely go there. I went there for an internship interview actually. It was for a company who makes a lot of the advertisements and covers for movies and tv shows like Walking Dead. Did not work out unfortunately, but they loved my photoshop work. So, yes I do realize I'm obviously stronger in photography and retouching, but I have found that if I'm going to have a chance at being a full-time employee at an advertisement agency here in the midwest in the US then I have to have design in my portfolio. I put design last to kind of hint at the fact that it is my weakest or newest skill, but I'm not sure how else I could include it with less emphasis while still being cohesive. Also my personal logo (on the home page) is a 3-legged symbol of two K's put together- my name is Katelin Kinney. So I was trying to reflect the three legs of the logo with three skills. If I do get to the interview process at some agencies around here I'll definitely be open with the fact that design is much newer to me, but I'm learning and progressing fairly quickly. So hopefully that will be enough to give them confidence that I could become a valued member of the team.

Your photoshop skills are off the hook! I've seen your "what's your party animal" flamingo piece before. Maybe on Behance? There was a whole series, right? You create a whole new world with photoshop. Hats off to you. :-)

Well snap! That is some amazing photoshop!

You certainly have an eye for design. I can only see your logos getting better as you get more comfortable with them!
