Submarine Sky

Brief from client

This is the third trying for the logo for comics and cartoons.

Sub-marine Sky text appears in front a surf board with a wave and a sky that evenlope them

I must say I'm a bit disappointed. Your previous sketches had much potential, especially with the hand lettering thing.

This version looks a bit too stale for me, compared to what the sketches. The wave feels rushed, the composition is quite uneven and the font has too many strokes and gradients... And it's a font! What happened to the bubbly letters we were promised?! =)

Globally, this makes me think more of some random surf board shop rather than an animated TV show.

The idea is there, the execution is not, unfortunately. Everything needs a bit more attention to detail. The giant strokes and gradients all over the place don't do anything for you, I'm afraid. I also don't like the gap in "Sky." It breaks up the lower half of the logo too much.

Save the clouds and sun for branding, I would stick with the wave, surfboard and the text.

This just has so much potential, I feel you're nearly there!

If all the letters in SUB and MARINE are caps, then shouldn't SKY look the same? It leaves a weird open area and throws off the balance for me.

Waaaay too busy. I'd simplify the font by losing the double outline and gradation.

For the element of sky, you've used multiple indicators or treatments - blue sky with gradation, clouds with blue to white (but mostly blue) gradation AND double outline, blue, then white.

You've got 4 colors going on just for the surfboard alone, and the wave is great and dimensional but again made up of multiple elements and colours... PLUS shadows. It's always great to ask yourself how a logo will scale up, but mostly down because that's when you get fill in and lose detail. Consider what media it will be used on - if ever only 1 size, only on the web, then sure, use this, but if it might be printed, it needs to be confident and simplified.

This is incredibly over complicated. Rule of thumb: More than three colors in a logo is a no no. You have all kinds of gradients, and overlapping, and 3-D styling that it is just confusing. As an illustration, this is fine. It could work for a poster header, or a promotional item, even a cool sticker. But as a logo, this needs a lot of work.
