The Optimists Club Golf Society

Brief from client

We like the idea of initializing the logo to OCGS.

Its been a good while since I last posted on here but I thought I would get your guys opinion on this new logo I've created for the Golf Society I play in! Thanks

I think the concept here is very strong and there is a lot of potential.

I would have spread out the text surrounding the main abbreviation in order to make the ball more complete.

Also, why did you connect the G to the S that way? The focus for this concept is the tee and ball, in my opinion, and the ligature distracts from this.

I think the "The" at the top also distracts from the overall concept, you don't need it.

Also, even though the tee is relatively proportionally correct in relation to the "ball" I would play with version of the mark with a bigger tee so it feels like less of an afterthought. Just test it out to see, not 100% sure.

I have a problem of defaulting to black and white with my designs: I feel the same issue applies here. Color would really bring this into the realm of golf, a nice soft green would push it farther and bring it to life, in my opinion. Was there a reason you opted for pure black?

Overall a very clean design and it could be used as-is with no real complaints, I just see a lot more potential for it.

Thanks for your thoughts Alex, very helpful!

I tried spreading the text out like you suggested but it just made it harder to read. I also think you can still tell its a ball shape with the text being the length it is. God point on the 'THE' I can see if they would be compliant on drop the 'THE' altogether.

I connected the G to the S just so that it wasn't so boring and adds a bit of character, also the OGCS will be used on its on as a logo to go on golf balls and on other things where the text isn't needed or where the logo needs to fit into a small space.

This is just in black and white at the moment as a starting point. It may stay in black and white im not sure yet.

Thanks

Have you tried increasing the size of the text when you spread it out? Try that first and then tell me if it still doesn't work.
Adding character is always good, but only if it makes sense.
For example, if I was designing a logo for a bank, and the logo was black, I could make the color bright pink. I could argue that this was to "add character", but in that instance bright pink is probably the wrong character to add to a bank logo. Do you see what I mean? I'm saying that when you add character, make sure it adds to the overall concept and meaning of the logo, rather than adding character for the sake of filling space or making things look "more interesting". In this case I feel that the "G-S" ligature does not add constructive character to your logo: rather, it detracts from the strong concept that already exists (the letters forming a ball).
I would say the same thing behind your color choice: what does the color convey? Often the problem with black on white these days is that the brain subconsciously views it as "plain and boring" because that is the default color for most software applications, most text, and most printing. Therefore pure black on pure white often looks cheap. If you modify the black somewhat, maybe make it a deep, dark green-grey, it would have more meaning than pure black.
Do you understand what I'm saying in general? Design decisions should serve the overall concept and ethos of what they represent, instead of arbitrarily hosting various characteristics because you're not sure what to use instead.
As well, if you're not using them already, I highly recommend creating creative briefs for your designs, as they will help inform your designs moving forward.
It's still a very usable logo and a good concept. But it's great to discuss it! Thanks for being open to feedback and discussing with me.
