nice! i would lose the bit on the top of the helmet tho as you can hardly tell what it is (the tree stump and mushrooms) almost looks a bit dodgy... lol
haha, I agree the crest (above the helm) does need a bit or reworking, however I don't want to remove it totally. A coat of arms has a few main elements I would like to keep as that is where it draws its meaning;
- shield
- symbol on the shield
- helm
- torse (twists of fabric between the helm and crest)
- crest
- and the mantle (the ribbons behind the shield)
I agree with M@. The acorn and the stem at the top can be seen as looking a little bit phallic. I would take that whole top portion with the stump altogether out and leave the helmet as is. In it's place you can put a spike on top that most medieval helmets tend to have. Other than that great work on modernizing it!
I agree with what you wrote above, Ryan- about needing to keep certain parts of the crest because that's what makes it unique to you or your family. I ALSO happen to agree that the acorn looks pretty damn phallic, and there might be ways of tweaking it so that it looks less like a penis. Heh...
Other than that I think you've done a great job, but there's one thing that (other than making the thing look less like a thing) I might alter:
The tree trunk. In the old crests it really looked like a tree trunk, and I'm not getting tree trunk at all from your version. Like it either needs to be taller, or have some kind of texture (bark?), or tree rings visible on the top/sliced away part!? It just needs SOMEthing... Because right now I get more of a weird hat vibe than a tree trunk!

Here is the original, the first digital one I put together, and my attempt at modernizing it

Nicely done though!
