you simply need to give up on the logo within a logo concept. It's just a terrible idea. sorry. at best it creates brand confusion and dilution of both.
The sooner you admit it isn't working the sooner you can get down to making one that does.
In an ideal world Jeff would be correct, however in the real world we often have to come up with the best visual solution given a bad set of parameters. This is what I mentioned in an earlier comment about having to do something similar. I had to create an identity for a new internal organization with connection to an established one using the older logo as part of the design. This happens more often than you think in a large corporation with dozens of BA's, ERG's, Councils, Directives, you name it, all interacting, reporting, or enveloping (say all that in your best southern preacher voice).. Some times design is making ten pounds of shit fit into a five pound bag.
maybe I should clarify. It will never look good. A logo needs a certain amount of space around it. but yeah, if the client wants you to do it, then do it.
ricardozea i think this is a good solution and you have a good point about the tension between the blue square and grey line in the symbol. However these are the two points that bug me in the symbol, I want to cut the blue lines down to match the grey, but that's my opinion, see what others think.
Yes, that's intentional. The reason why the C and the D have a slightly different height is because in my geometry I was using the diagonals from the ends of the C align with the inside of the D.
In the attached image you'll see what I mean on the left design.
On the right design, bot letters are 100% symmetrical.
The geometry was also based on the fact that HTML, CSS and JS aren't perfect either.
You know how the Spotify mark isn't completely straight? It's a little inclined to the right? I like that little detail of imperfection.
However, the completely symmetrical design you suggested looks great too.
BTW, I left all the guides so you can compare the geometries.
Yes on the left symmetrical one, I like asymmetry and intentional imbalance in design sometimes, but this one just doesn't hit me right. But I have been wrong before, follow your instincts.
Ricardo, try to draw " codepen " in a same geometrical manner as you did on the " o " and see what will happen. Also, you might try to do " DAYTON " in geometrical, as well to match a symbol. Doesn't hurt to try to see how all will play out. Good luck.

Well, yes, this is EXACTLY the same situation as mine, spot on.
Granted, your case is more dramatic due to the elaborate designs of the marks and the smaller logo, plus the length of the name.
Just as you, I'm trying to downplay the one logo while maintaining its integrity.
Thanks for sharing your solution, very helpful.

I don't think I need to give up, at all
This is a particular case that I'm sure I can find a solution for, hopefully with the help of fellow designers.
The only thing I have to admit is: I will not give up.

Hey fredrg, great eye.
